Semplice Flute Duo are based in Birmingham. Both Hayley and Katherine will be graduating with BMus (hons) in the summer of 2010 from Birmingham Conservatoire.

Hayley License started to play the flute when she was 8 and entered the Royal College of Music Junior Department, studying with alan Baker at the age of 18. He she played principal flute with the Symphony Orchestra, with whom she went on tour to Italy with, and the Chamber Orchestra. During her time here she also took a solo part in Elgar’s Nursery Suite conducted by Mark Elder, which was recorded at Henry Wood Hall for the Queen’s 80th birthday. Following this, Hayley went on to study at Birmingham Conservatoire with Jonathan Rimmer, Judith Hall and Colin Liley. She has played with all of the major ensembles here including the Symphony Orchestra and the Thallein Ensemble. Hayley has also taken part in masterclasses with Karen Jones and Wissam Boustany. Together with her studies at the Conservatoire Hayley has played principal flute with the CBSO Youth Orchestra and is also a member of the contemporary music ensemble, Interrobang.

Katherine Smith began learning the flute at St Wilfrid’s School in Haywards Heath and continued her flute studies at Christ’s Hospital School. It was here that her interest blossomed, and she made the decision to further her studies at Music College.  Katherine is in her fourth and final year at Birmingham Conservatoire studying the flute under the tuition of Colin Lilley of the CBSO. She also has lessons with Judith Hall and Jonathon Rimmer. Katherine enjoys a wide genre of music, which includes folk, jazz and classical. As well as solo performing Katherine also enjoys playing in Orchestra’s and smaller ensemble groups. Her interest in contemporary music has allowed her to take part in various composer’s concerts and contemporary ensembles at the Conservatoire. Through-out her musical life Katherine has performed in a variety of places, which include St. Johns, Smith Square, The Royal Albert Hall, Notre Dame Cathedral, Kalamandir Hall and more recently Adrian Boult Hall. As well as performing Katherine has also developed an interest in community music; and in the last few years she has taken part in many programmes working with young children and adults.
